Mental disorders are usually associated with the abnormal functioning of a human brain due to complexities arisen in brain circuits. It is an outcome of the complex role of genetics which play an important role during the developmental process of the brain. Mental disorders are of different types. Mental disorder due to anxiety or fear of something (phobia, anxiety disorder), mental disorder due to mood i.e. prolonged sadness (depression), mental disorder due to wrong perception of things all around (schizophrenia) or mental disorder due to abnormal behavior and thoughts (maladaptive disorder). Insomnia, Anorexia, Gender dysphoria and paraphilia are also associated mental disorders.
Causes of mental disorders are yet to be identified correctly as there is no rigid or consistent source of the problem. A common census among psychiatrics is that the disorder arises due to the vulnerabilities in genes during the development of brain and the behavior subjected to a child during his developmental years. Experts believe that children who are subjected to any form of abuse stand a substantial chance to develop a mental disorder when they grow up. Female child abuse is one the reasons for eating disorders and personality disorder among adult women.
Symptoms of a mental disorder are often hard to trace. They are usually revealed during the consultations with the family doctors or psychiatrists. It becomes very necessary to know the patient very closely before attempting to cure his problem. Wrong assessment of the situation may worsen the problem.
Mental disorder can be avoided just by being supportive to your child or to the patient suffering from the problem. A prolonged feeling of inferiority, criticism, tension and social rejection lead to this problem. Hence being supportive enough helps keep the problem at bay. People who are subjected to such kind of behavior tend to develop some form of mental disorder.
Treatment for mental disorders is provided in mental hospitals, recovery and counseling centers and psychiatric clinics. These institutions help in curing the problem over a period of time by helping the individual find a meaning to life and to help them regain their self confidence and dignity. Psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapies are provided to achieve the purpose.
Several medications are also provided for severe cases. Antidepressants are given for depression cases and Anxiolytics are recommended for persons having anxiety related disorders. In even more severe cases, these medications fail to have an impact on the patient. Then Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is provided to patients having acute depression. Some Neurologists argue that Psychosurgery can help cure the problem but this process is in experimental stage and the risks involved are very high.
Till date the best cure is professional counseling through a psychiatrist as well as peer counseling through the friends and relatives of the patient as it is often difficult for the patient to open his mind in front of a stranger psychiatrist.
